Burscough Where things come in pairs Two canals, two railway stations and two nearby nature reserves are all featured in ambitious regeneration plans for the town. A plan to restore the railway link between Southport and Preston after a period of 40 years by re-laying the 'Burscough curves' would boost the local economy and make the town even more popular as a place to live, giving ready access to Liverpool, Preston, Southport and Manchester. The creation of the 'Ribble Link' to the canal system has seen an increase of canal pleasure craft in the area as the Lancaster canal now joins the Leeds Liverpool canal via the River Ribble and Burscough. In summer moorings are full both in the town and at Top Locks where the two canals meet - reminiscent of the early canal days when packet boats ran between Liverpool and Wigan. The 60ft horse-drawn boats had first and second class saloons, divided by a kitchen serving food to first class passengers. On the edge of town is Martin Mere Nature Reserve, one of 8 belonging to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and even if you are not a keen birdwatcher the collection of exotic birds is quite an attraction. A little further north, The Lancashire Wildlife Trust have their showpiece reserve at Mere Sands Wood. A woodland walk around flooded sand workings can again be pleasing to the non-birdwatcher.
